Terms of use
Not yet reviewed by a lawyer. This page explains in plain words how Aurnis works and what you can expect. It will be reviewed and may change before paid plans or public launch; if it changes in a way that matters to you, we will tell you.
1. Who we are and this agreement
Aurnis is run by Aurnis, a business operating in India under the name Aurnis (company registration is in progress), with its address at India (the registered address will be published here once the company is registered) (“Aurnis”, “we”, “us”). These terms are the agreement between you and us for the Aurnis website, the Aurnis app and anything else we offer under the Aurnis name (the “service”).
By creating an account or using the service you accept these terms, our Privacy notice, our Acceptable use and copyright policy and, once you buy a paid plan, our Subscription terms. If you do not agree, do not use the service.
2. Who can use Aurnis
- You must be at least 18 years old, or the age of legal adulthood where you live if that is higher. Aurnis is not for children and we do not knowingly allow anyone younger to hold an account. When you sign up we ask you to confirm your age, and we keep a record of that confirmation and of the version of these terms you accepted.
- You must be able to form a binding contract, and not be barred from using the service by law.
- One person, one account. Do not create accounts for other people or share your sign-in.
- Aurnis is offered only in the countries we have opened. We may block access from other places, and from places where the law does not allow us to do business.
- Aurnis is for personal and household use: housemates, friends, family, trips and similar groups. If you want to use it to run a business or manage rental property for others, tell us first, because other terms and a data processing agreement apply.
3. What Aurnis is, and is not
Aurnis is a tool for keeping a shared record of money and chores in a home or group: who is owed what, who has paid, whose turn it is, which rules were agreed.
- We never hold, move or send your money. Aurnis records what people enter and confirm. Payments between people happen outside Aurnis, in cash, by bank transfer or however you choose. Aurnis is not a bank, payment service, money transmitter, lender, debt collector, accountant, tax adviser or lawyer.
- Balances, statements and reports are only as accurate as what people put in. A statement is a record of the shared ledger on the day it was issued. It is not a tax invoice, a receipt for tax purposes, a lease, or evidence that a debt is legally owed.
- Aurnis is not a party to any agreement between members, such as a lease, a bill split, or a house rule, and we do not decide who is right when members disagree.
- Nothing in the service is financial, tax, legal or tenancy advice.
4. Your account
- Give accurate details and keep them up to date. Keep your password and authenticator safe, and tell us at once if you think someone else has access: security@aurnis.com.
- You are responsible for what happens under your account unless someone got in because of something we did wrong.
- For sensitive actions, such as deleting a space or changing who owns it, we ask you to sign in again. This protects you.
- You can export your data and delete your account in Settings at any time (see section 12).
5. Spaces, roles and other members
People use Aurnis in a “space” (a house, a group, a trip, or your own private space). The person who creates a space is its Space admin (the owner). Other roles, such as Head of house, Rent collector, Fund keeper and Chore manager, are given by the space’s leaders and decide what each person can see and do.
- Members can see each other’s information as the roles allow. For example, everyone in a space sees the shared bills, chores and rules, and leaders can see every member’s balance and statement. By joining a space you accept that, and the Space admin confirms they have the right to invite the people they invite.
- The Space admin and leaders decide a space’s settings, rules, who joins and who holds roles. They are not Aurnis staff, and Aurnis is not responsible for their decisions.
- Records of past bills and payments stay with the space after someone leaves, because other people’s balances depend on them. When a person deletes their account, their name on those records becomes “Former member”.
- A Space admin who leaves, or deletes a space, must follow the steps in the app, which protect other members (for example, handing the space to someone else first).
6. House penalties
Some spaces choose to agree penalties (sometimes called fines) for breaking house rules, such as missing a chore. This feature is off by default and a space can turn it on only by writing the rule down and asking every member to confirm they have read it.
- A penalty is an agreement among the members of a space. Aurnis does not collect, hold, enforce or approve penalties, and does not decide whether a penalty is fair or lawful.
- Members must not use penalties in a way that breaks the law or a lease, for example by charging amounts a tenancy or consumer law does not allow, or by targeting someone because of who they are.
- Any member can ask for a penalty to be reviewed in the app. Leaders can reverse it.
7. Your content
- “Your content” is what you put into Aurnis: names, bills, amounts, notes, rules, photos, documents and so on. You keep ownership of it.
- You give us a licence to store, process, display and back up your content, and to share it with the other members of your space as you and they use the roles, for as long as needed to run the service for you. We do not use your content to advertise, and we do not sell it.
- You promise that you have the right to put it in (for example, that you may share a copy of a lease with your housemates), and that it does not break the law or anyone’s rights.
- Do not upload more than is needed. Do not upload government ID numbers, bank card or account numbers, health information, or anything about people under 18. Photos you add as proof of a chore should show the finished task, not people. Documents such as leases may hold personal details: cover what other members do not need.
- We may remove content that breaks these terms or the Acceptable use policy.
8. Using Aurnis responsibly
Do not misuse the service. In short: no harassment, no unlawful or fraudulent use, no attempts to break, overload, scrape or reverse-engineer it, no spam, no creating accounts to avoid a limit or a suspension, and no uploading material that infringes someone else’s rights. The details, and how to report copyright or abuse, are in the Acceptable use and copyright policy.
9. Plans, trials and payment
Aurnis has a free plan with limits (for example, on the number of people in a space). Paid plans may be offered. A paid plan covers a whole space and is paid for by one person, usually the Space admin. Other members of a paid space do not pay and are never charged. Prices, billing periods, renewal, free trials, cancelling and refunds are in the Subscription terms. Nothing is charged unless you choose a paid plan and confirm it.
10. Our rights and yours
- The service, its design, software, name and logo belong to us or our licensors. These terms give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use the service as described, and nothing more.
- Some parts of the service use third-party software and icons under their own licences. Credits are on the Licences page.
- If you send us feedback or ideas, we may use them without owing you anything, but we will not publish your name or content without asking.
11. Changes, early access and availability
We keep improving Aurnis, so features will change. While we are in early access, parts of the service may be unfinished or interrupted, and we cannot promise it will always be available. We work to protect your data and to keep the service running, but we do not guarantee uninterrupted service. If we stop offering the service or remove a feature you rely on, we will give you reasonable notice (at least 30 days where we can) and a way to export your data. If you have paid for a period we cannot deliver, we will refund the unused part.
12. Ending things
- You can export your data and delete your account in Settings at any time. Deleting your account removes you from your spaces. You have 30 days to change your mind; after that your identity is removed from the records you leave behind. A space with other people in it must be handed to someone else first, and some balances must be settled before you can leave. The app tells you what is in the way.
- We may suspend or end an account or a space if it breaks these terms, puts other people or the service at risk, or if the law requires. Where we reasonably can, we tell you why first and give you a chance to fix it, and we give you a way to export your data.
- If a space has been inactive for a long time we will warn the owner before we close it.
- Sections that by their nature should continue (ownership, disclaimers, liability, disputes) continue after the agreement ends.
13. No guarantees about money or advice
To the fullest extent the law allows, the service is provided “as is” and “as available”. We do not promise that it is error-free, that every notification arrives, or that what members enter is accurate. You are responsible for checking balances and for paying what you owe each other. We are not responsible for losses that come from what other members enter or fail to enter, or from agreements between members. Nothing in this section removes rights you have by law that cannot be removed.
14. Limits on liability
To the fullest extent the law allows:
- we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, lost profits, lost savings, or loss of goodwill; and
- our total liability to you for anything connected to the service is limited to the greater of what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, and 100 US dollars.
Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that the law does not allow to be limited. If you are a consumer, you also keep the rights the law of your country gives you. Some places do not allow some of these limits, so they may not apply to you.
15. Disputes and governing law
If something goes wrong, write to legal@aurnis.com first and give us 30 days to put it right. Most problems can be solved that way.
These terms are governed by the laws of India (including the Indian Contract Act, 1872 and the Information Technology Act, 2000), and disputes that are not settled will be heard in the competent courts in India, except that if you are a consumer you may also bring a claim in the courts of the place where you live, and the mandatory consumer protection rules of that place still apply to you.
16. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms, for example when we add features or when the law changes. For a change that matters to you, we will tell you by email or in the app at least 30 days before it takes effect and ask you to accept the new version where the law requires it. If you do not accept, you can export your data and delete your account before the change takes effect. The version number and effective date are at the top of this page.
17. General
- These terms, with the policies they refer to, are the whole agreement between you and us about the service.
- If a part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest continues. If we do not enforce a right straight away, we have not given it up.
- You may not transfer your rights under these terms without our consent. We may transfer ours as part of a merger, sale or reorganisation, and we will tell you if that happens.
- We are not liable for delay or failure caused by events beyond our reasonable control.
- We give notices to the email address on your account or in the app. You give notices to legal@aurnis.com.
- These terms are written in English. If we provide a translation, the English version applies if they differ, unless the law of your country says otherwise.
